Industry Benchmark
Software testing and quality is a significant component of IT expenditure. Previous benchmarks have shown software testing is increasing to over 20% of the IT project budget expenditure, with expectations for further increases. Yet many organisations are unsure of what value testing provides, and whether their approach is up to scratch. In 2009, K. J. Ross & Associates are extending their software testing and quality industry study to benchmark the value perception of software testing, and to identify trends for IT executives regarding adoption of software testing and quality practices. This will be the most comprehensive benchmark undertaken in Australia to date.
The benchmark will analyse industry trends relating to:
- How do different stakeholders perceive benefits realisation from software quality and testing
- Sourcing strategies, including insourcing, outsourcing and offshoring
- How much organisations are paying for software quality resources (salaries and contractor rates)
- What is the investment breakdown between people, tools and environments
- What adoption of tools, techniques and lifecycles represent best-practice amongst organisations, and what level of benefits realisation is being achieved
- How are teams structured, and what is the level of skills development for staff
- What is the profile of defects being discovered
- What are some of the key productivity measures for testing activities
